Coaching Staff

Ryan Bernardi

HEAD COACH

Prolific Prep National

Ryan Bernardi is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential young coaches in high school basketball today. Since being named Head Coach of Prolific Prep in April 2022, Bernardi has guided one of the nation’s premier programs with relentless discipline, competitive intensity, and a clear developmental vision—building a culture that consistently produces national-level success and elite, next-level talent.

A Boston native, Bernardi began his head-coaching career at 19, quickly establishing himself as a program builder. At Burlington Christian Academy, he set a school record for wins and developed the school’s first Division I basketball player. He later transformed The Burlington School into a North Carolina powerhouse, capturing two state championships, finishing as a state runner-up, and earning a MaxPreps national ranking as high as No. 17. During his four-year tenure, he compiled a 99–31 record and helped 16 players advance to the collegiate level.

Now owning a remarkable career record of 203–46 (.815), Bernardi has coached seven McDonald’s All-Americans, five Nike Hoop Summit selections, five No. 1-ranked high school players, and a Naismith National Player of the Year. In 2024, Yves Missi became Bernardi’s first NBA player, earning NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors—marking a major milestone in his coaching journey.

Our goal is bigger than wins,” Bernardi says. “We’re here to develop complete players—on the court, in the classroom, and in life. If you commit to the work, the culture, and the process, the results take care of themselves.”

A three-time Grind Session Coach of the Year and two-time Naismith National Coach of the Year finalist, Bernardi is known for elite player development, advanced tactical preparation, and transformational leadership. A graduate of Elon University, he is not just leading Prolific Prep—he is helping define the standard for the future of high school basketball.

Caleb Vanderburg

ASSISTANT HEAD COACH

Prolific Prep National

Caleb Vanderburg brings defensive excellence, elite communication, and a championship pedigree to the Prolific Prep bench. As Associate Head Coach, Vanderburg plays a critical role in shaping the program’s tough, disciplined identity and sustaining a culture built on accountability and winning. His coaching partnership with Head Coach Ryan Bernardi began at The Burlington School, where the duo led the program to back-to-back North Carolina state championships.

Widely respected for designing intelligent, aggressive defensive systems, Vanderburg was instrumental in transforming The Burlington School into one of the most feared and respected defensive teams in the country. His approach blends detailed preparation with relentless physicality, demanding focus, effort, and trust from every player on the floor.

Vanderburg began his coaching career at Elon University, working with Division I athletes under coaches with deep ties to Davidson and Duke, gaining exposure to high-level player development and advanced basketball systems. A Durham, North Carolina native with a degree in Public Health, he brings a unique perspective that emphasizes mental toughness, personal responsibility, and long-term growth.

Defense is about pride, communication, and trust,” Vanderburg says. “When five guys are connected and committed to the details, that’s when teams break—and championships are built.”

At Prolific Prep, Vanderburg sets the daily standard for discipline, precision, and competitive growth—ensuring players are prepared not just to compete, but to lead at the next level.

Matt Handy

Prolific Prep Head Assistant Coach / Director of Development

Prolific Prep National

As Prolific Prep’s Lead Assistant Coach, Coach Handy leads the program’s player development efforts and serves as the architect behind its elite, results-driven development system. Widely respected for his ability to identify, diagnose, and accelerate growth, Handy is the driving force behind the method—a personalized, research-backed approach designed to turn high-potential prospects into complete, next-level players. His work ensures that every athlete at Prolific Prep develops with intention, clarity, and a clear path toward long-term success.

Handy is known for pinpointing exactly where a player needs improvement and attacking it with precision. From elevating unranked big men to No. 1 national status, to increasing three-point shooting from 10% to 42%, his results speak for themselves. Over more than a decade of training, he has worked with 100+ professional and collegiate players, including two NBA First-Round Picks, the NCAA Leading Scorer, 10 McDonald’s All-Americans, four No. 1-ranked players, and a Naismith National Player of the Year.

His experience extends far beyond the high school level. Handy has had a front-row seat learning from 50+ NBA players and 10+ NBA All-Stars, including Jayson Tatum, Julius Randle, Dwyane Wade, Zach LaVine, and Carmelo Anthony. That exposure shapes a development philosophy grounded in elite standards, modern skill demands, and professional-level habits.

“Development isn’t random—it’s intentional,” Handy says. “Every rep has a purpose, and every player has a path. When you commit to the process, real growth follows.”

At Prolific Prep, Coach Handy is more than a skills trainer—he is a trusted mentor and relationship builder, shaping futures one rep and one conversation at a time.

Austin Sherrell

Prolific Prep Assistant Coach

Prolific Prep National

Austin Sherrell, widely known as “Coach Sauce,” joins Prolific Prep with four years of experience in the highest levels of grassroots basketball. A Detroit, Michigan native, Sherrell entered the national basketball landscape by navigating the recruiting and development journey of his younger brother, Aiden Sherrell—gaining firsthand experience in talent evaluation, relationship-building, and the realities of elite-level player pathways.

Beginning in Georgia, Sherrell developed a deep understanding of basketball demographics across the Southeast before leveraging national relationships to help position his brother for success. That journey culminated in Aiden becoming a McDonald’s All-American, a Jordan Brand Classic selection, and ultimately the starting center at the University of Alabama—development that was sharpened through his time at Prolific Prep.

Throughout his career, Sherrell has worked with and contributed to the growth of several premier programs and basketball institutions, including Vegas Elite EYBL (Nevada), The Family EYBL (Michigan), New Haven Community Schools (Michigan), the Chris Brickley Invitational (New York City), and Hillcrest Prep (Arizona). Known for his energy, connectivity, and player-first mindset, Coach Sauce brings a modern, relationship-driven approach to Prolific Prep, strengthening the program’s national footprint and developmental ecosystem.

Paul Murray

Prolific Prep Assistant Coach

Prolific Prep National

Paul Murray brings structure, precision, and relentless energy to Prolific Prep’s daily operation. In his first season as a full-time assistant coach, Murray plays an integral role in player development, advanced scouting, and culture-building, serving as both a strategic voice on the floor and a driving organizational force behind the scenes.

A Princeton, New Jersey native and Elon University graduate with degrees in History and Strategic Communications, Murray is widely regarded as a sharp basketball mind and a coach who leads with intention. He spent the previous two seasons as a head coach at Golden State Prep, where he helped develop high-major prospects while establishing a disciplined, competitive standard within the program. Prior to that, Murray led Henderson Collegiate to both regular-season and tournament championships in his lone year as head coach, implementing an aggressive, full-court system that consistently overwhelmed opponents and routinely generated 40-plus turnovers per game.

Murray began his coaching career alongside Ryan Bernardi, spending four seasons on staff at Burlington Christian and The Burlington School. During that stretch, their teams won at a high level, developed dozens of college-level players, and laid the foundation for what would become a nationally respected coaching partnership. Today, Murray brings that same intensity, preparation, and culture-first mindset to Prolific Prep, helping elevate every player and every possession.
